Columbus's legacy is certainly complicated. And controversial. His story was perhaps inflated out of ethnic Italian pride, since Columbus was often thought to be Genoese. I read a recent historian who thinks he was actually Catalan, and working under an alias. He's sometimes been described as the only one among his contemporaries who realized the earth is round, but educated people since at least Hellenistic times have known the earth is round, and Eratosthenes got a good estimate of the earth's circumference in the third century BC. Columbus (reputedly) claimed the earth is actually much smaller, in order to claim a viable western route to the Indies. The consequences of his discoveries were dramatic: Spain quickly built an empire by conquest, becoming very wealthy in the process. The natives living in the areas they claimed were mostly enslaved. Columbus had a role in that. Diseases brought from Europe decimated native populations, including populations who had no contact with the Spanish. It hardly seems fair to blame Columbus, or Europeans generally, for epidemics. There's a lot more to Columbus, both good and bad, than can be encapsulated in a class for elementary schools. He doesn't seem a particularly American hero, any more than Cortez or Pizzaro. There may be better candidates for statues in American cities. But demolishing statues by vandalism is unworthy.

I'm a history buff, but didn't know all this. The Great Depression was the first violent power grab of the Federal Reserve Bank, which would have happily starved America to get their hands on all privately held gold. Hoover didn't cooperate with them; FDR did. Hoover was an admirable man whose presidency was torpedoed by globalists he had no idea were gunning for him. A few minutes of advice from Andrew Jackson would have been invaluable to him, warning him about 'the bank.'

@@BradDison One suggestion: I remember one describing a family who owned a farm in Virginia in 1861. They had the misfortune of having the first battle of Manassas (Bull Run) "in their front yard". They then moved to a safer location in southern Virginia, near Appomattox. The war ended in their parlor. With the wonder of Wikipedia, it appears it was the Wilmer McLean family. I wonder what the rest of the rest of their story would be.

So you're sitting on the side of the highway in your police car catching speeders. A car whips past to doing 50 khm over the limit. You turn on your lights and go after the speeder. Few miles down they road they pull over, you walk up and without looking at the driver, ask for drivers license, insurance and registration. Only to hear "I don't have a drivers license officer." When you do look at the driver, there sits the Queen of England. What do you do?

WHOA! Blows me away, I'm about to listen to the rest of the rest of the story.... Didn't Paul lose Linda to breast cancer? Damn, he'd already been through that pain, but to have to experience that with the two women you love most in the world. Sad. Very sad. May be losing His mother, Mary, is what helped him help Linda through her ordeal. Still, you wouldn't think fate could be so ironic, and cruel. God bless all the souls lost through cancer!
